Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MESD) and Botho University have signed an agreement to grow and develop Botswana’s education system.
Speaking at the event in Gaborone, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, Ms Miriam Maroba, said the agreement was for training teachers on the integration of Information Communication Technology (ICT) for the effective delivery of teaching and learning.
“For MESD to deliver the well rounded 21st century learner and for Botswana to achieve the goal of becoming a knowledge based economy and high income status as espoused in Vision 2036, continuous development of the teachers is critical to keep them up to speed with the latest trends in education including the use of ICT in the classroom,” Ms Maroba said.
She said the second agreement was a partnership for the development of a Digital Application (App) to facilitate the teaching of literacy to hearing impaired learners.
“The App is a work in progress and I am happy to inform you that its development is already at an advanced stage and it will be ready in January 2024,” said Ms Maroba.
For her part, Botho University Vice Chancellor, Ms Sheela Raja Ram said the Botho University had offered to develop training materials and train 4 500 teachers on online teaching pedagogies.
“This training will target secondary school teachers and it will be conducted online, it will also build upon the basic skills that have already been put in place through pre-service and in-service teacher trainings,” Ms Ram said.
She also said that Botho University’s ICT students would be attached to schools for industrial attachment to work with MESD in facilitating a smooth implementation of the training and to support the delivery of ICT integrated teaching and learning strategies.
