Africa-Press – Botswana. The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture closed its annual general meeting today at the Gaborone International Conference Centre. The five day meeting delivered clear outcomes and practical lessons for universities, researchers and partners. Participants focused on how higher education can drive growth across the continent.

The Minister of Higher Education, Honourable Prince Maele, officially closed the meeting. He thanked the delegates for their commitment to strengthening higher education. He noted that everyone shared one goal, to ensure universities make a real impact on Africa’s future. He explained that the discussions showed how partnerships between universities, industries and government can produce new ideas and support innovation.

He pointed out that the meeting looked closely at how institutions operate. Delegates examined governance, leadership and the resilience of their systems. They identified areas that need improvement to help institutions stand stronger.

He also stressed the importance of modern infrastructure. He stated that infrastructure includes digital tools, laboratories and spaces that support practical learning. He added that graduates need entrepreneurial skills because employers value work readiness.

Digital transformation was a major topic. Delegates explored new ways to fund universities and keep them financially stable. They also discussed staff motivation, workplace culture and the need to fill critical roles that affect performance.

The meeting ended with an awards ceremony that recognised outstanding contributions in several categories:

Honourable Maele reminded participants that continental networks like RUFORUM hold real value. He expressed his satisfaction that Botswana universities are active members. He encouraged teamwork among member institutions because shared action delivers stronger results.

The next RUFORUM annual meeting will take place in Zambia in 2026.
