Africa-Press – Botswana. Can Mamelodi Sundowns claim a second CAF Women’s Champions League title? That has been the question on the lips of the thousands of followers of the African women’s game since the official draw held in Abidjan a few weeks ago.
Champions of the inaugural edition in held in Cairo two years ago, the South Africans head into the competition as strong title contenders following the loss in the finals against reigning champions AS Far last season.
Similar to their male counterparts’ style of play, Masandawana are unmatched when it comes to ball rotation and retention, making them one of the most difficult sides to press as they specialize in playing from the back and finding each other in tight spaces.
Drawn in Group A consisting of tournament hosts, Athletico Abidjan, Sporting Casablanca of Morocco as well as Tanzania’s JKT Queens, Masandawana have it all to play for in Korhogo where they will be based for their group stage encounters:

Head coach : Jerry Tshabalala
A coach with high ambitions of conquering the continent, “Coach Jerry” as he is affectionately known by his players continues to build a formidable side in Mamelodi Sundowns.
Quoted as saying “We just want to prove that we are still one of the best teams on the continent” when speaking to CAFOnline a few weeks ago, Tshabalala’s astute tactical acumen will be key in masterminding a second continental title for Sundowns against the best women’s football clubs on the continent.
KEY PLAYER: Chuene Morifi
The skilful winger was instrumental in Sundowns’ qualification to the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Possessing an incredible burst of pace and trickery, Morifi also has an eye for goal and will be crucial in Tshabalala’s attacking arsenal.
She finished as one of the top goal scorers in the COSAFA qualifiers with three goals, which included the opening goal in the finals where they overcame Botswana’s Double Action Ladies.
