Value Chain Development Workshop Targets Stronger Local Manufacturing

Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Minerals and Energy held a Value Chain Development workshop to push collaboration among mining houses. The goal was to identify local value chain opportunities and create pathways to localise manufacturing, repair and rebuild capabilities. The workshop brought together key industry players who share an interest in stronger local production systems.

In her address, Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Joy Kenewendo said value chain development is a national priority. She said deeper value chains raise local manufacturing capacity and cut dependence on imports. She added that this shift creates skilled and sustainable jobs and increases citizen participation in high value sectors.

She said the workshop aimed to produce clear priorities for value chain opportunities. She called for open identification of challenges and realistic mitigation measures. She asked the industry to commit to joint action through a formal Memorandum of Understanding and a clear plan for collaborative implementation.

Seven companies closed the workshop by signing an MoU that confirms their support for stronger local manufacturing. The companies are Kopano Copper Mine, Debswana Diamond Company, Botswana Chamber of Mines, Morupule Coal Mine, Botswana Railways, Tshukudu Metals and Botswana Ash.

These companies committed to identifying products that mining houses use in high volumes. They also agreed to explore chances to produce such products locally. They will support scale up efforts through their procurement programs. The commitment signals a shared intent to grow Botswana’s industrial capacity and strengthen the local economy through coordinated action.
