Africa-Press – Cape verde. The former Director General of Higher Education, Aquilino Varela, said today that he is evaluating, “with strong possibilities”, the presentation of a candidacy for the Municipality of Santa Catarina, Santiago, in the 2024 municipal elections. it will be a “civic and ideologically free candidacy.”
In a publication made on the morning of this Monday, 10th, on his Facebook page, Aquilino Varela revealed that he has long been urged to move forward with a candidacy for that municipality.
If you follow this path, you guarantee, from now on, that your candidacy will be civic, inclusive, community and without “ideological anxieties”.
“As a public servant and decision-maker that I have been, with almost two decades of experience, I have the integrity and conviction of having always been defending the public interest and promoting the common good. I have the knowledge, technical preparation, strength and availability, towards more citizens, competent, dedicated and honest young people, to shoulder the task of institutionalizing a competent and successful leadership in the Presidency of the City Council of Santa Catarina de Santiago”, he announced.
Finding out about the situation in the municipality that is experiencing “setbacks”
Aquilino Varela, who until November 2022 held the position of Director General of Higher Education, a position from which he was exonerated four months after the end of his term, says that, in the last six months, he has been learning about the situation in the municipality , making visits and contacts.
On this basis, he points to “setbacks, disappointments, disorganization and amateurism” in city council management which, in his view, has led, among other things, to the loss of centrality of Santa Catarina in the North Santiago Region and in relation to the national whole.
Still, he says, “the excessive partisanship of decisions and opportunities are the problems highlighted by the populations of various locations, along with strong records of problems within the scope of the Central Government, such as the economic gridlock of the municipality, youth unemployment, insecurity, the loss of purchasing power and the increase in absolute and extreme poverty”.
Break with parochialism and “mediocre” decision-making patterns
“Considering the degeneracy of the Cape Verdean political system that has placed the Municipality as the leader of the political parties, hampering the energetic development of the municipalities and their localities, and seeing through the folklorization of politics and the alienation of young people and good citizens in relation to political participation, I will demonstrate that I am prepared to build and seduce the people of Santa Catarina with new projects that reinvigorate a new development plan, far removed from the partisan yoke”, he indicates.
The decision to be taken, he guarantees, will be civic, inclusive, community and will provide projects and paths for a development model that breaks with “parochialism and with mediocre standards of decision and positioning taken in the management of the City Council of Santa Catarina”.
