São Vicente: “Society demands an exemplary ethical conduct from judges” – PGR

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Attorney General of the Republic said today in Mindelo that society demands an exemplary ethical conduct from magistrates and that justice, the courts, the public ministry, magistrates and justice officials are permanently scrutinised.

Luís José Landim, who was speaking at the opening of the International Conference on Ethics and Integrity of Public Ministry Magistrates, defended that this scrutiny is legitimate.

“We are fully aware that confidence in justice depends to a large extent on the profile, posture, of the magistrate. There is a set of duties, principles and norms of conduct that must regulate the public and professional behavior of the magistrate, in order to safeguard the public’s trust in the integrity of the justice system”, he explained, recalling, however, that “before becoming a magistrate, judge or prosecutor, the trainee must already be an ethically irreproachable”.

With this in mind, he added, the aim of the 6th conference of public prosecutors is to collect information and experiences of other countries that can be adapted to the draft code of ethics for public prosecutors in Cabo Verde.

The Minister of Justice, Joana Rosa, said, in a speech via videoconference, that the debate on the need for a code of conduct for magistrates has long occupied the legal sphere, with arguments of interest to any citizen who is attentive and interested in these matters.
