Africa-Press – Cape verde. The municipality of Maputo owes around 300 million meticais (4.3 million euros) to waste collection companies, a situation that is causing the proliferation of waste in some areas, said the mayor of the Mozambican capital.

“Around around 300 million meticais (…). Naturally, some [creditors] understand, others don’t”, said Rasaque Manhique, in statements quoted today by the daily O País.

Manhique admitted that the situation has resulted in “containers full of rubbish”, but the municipality has “created mechanisms for collection”.

The official said that the debt was inherited from the previous municipal executive, who ceased office at the beginning of this year, following the municipal elections last October.

The mayor of Maputo declared that negotiations are underway on debt relief, with a view to resuming normal cleaning services in the capital.

Rasaque Manhique also pointed out the concern about the occupation of streets by informal vendors, defending the need to organize commerce.

“We need to organize informal trade. As you know, they are mothers and young people who are on the streets and who need some support”, emphasized Manhique.
