Madeira, Canary Islands, Cape Verde and Azores Create Association to Attract Cruises to the Macaronesian Islands

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The International Association of Ports of Macaronesia was created from the Cruise Atlantic Islands (CAI) brand to promote the itinerary between Madeira, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and the Azores, establishing the Macaronesian islands as a new cruise destination.

The formalization was made on August 6th, with the aim of “creating a new tourist destination in terms of cruises, which is Macaronesia”, explained this Friday, Paula Cabaço, president of the Port Administration of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (APRAM), quoted by Publituris.

Paula Cabaço explained that this association was born from the Cruise Atlantic Islands (CAI) brand, created more than 30 years ago and that it aimed to “promote the itinerary between Madeira and the Canary Islands, to which Cape Verde was later joined and, very recently, the Azores archipelago”.

“These four archipelagos are aware of the potential of their territory, of its unique, authentic and, at the same time, diverse characteristics, and they want to assert themselves and position themselves in the cruise tourism industry and reinforce their positioning with this dream of creating a new tourist destination in terms of cruise destinations, which is Macaronesia”, explained the person in charge, at the opening of the conference that marked the 30th anniversary of the creation of CAI and that took place in Funchal.

Paula Cabaço indicated that the constitution of the International Association of Ports of Macaronesia will give legal personality to the CAI brand, which allows, for example, applications for community funds to promote the destination, although the activity plan for 2025 is still to be defined, which should take place on 11 November, the date of the first general assembly of the new association.

“We are going to come together to, basically, appoint the governing bodies and management, as well as the secretariat, and to define the activity plan for the coming year”, revealed the president of APRAM, who is also the first president of the International Association of Ports of Macaronesia.

The mandates of the new association will last two years, rotating among all the members that make up the new association, specifically the Ports of Madeira, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and the Azores.

The new association will also be important for speaking to the cruise companies with “one voice”, since, from now on, the companies know that “in this common itinerary they have a single interlocutor, which is the International Association of Ports of the Macaronesia Islands”, she concluded.
