Africa-Press – Cape verde. Nine people have died every day in Angola, on average, from cholera, since the first reported case, on January 7, with the country totaling 630 deaths and 21,084 infections, according to official data consulted today by Lusa.
According to data from the Epidemiological Surveillance System of the National Directorate of Public Health of Angola, the country registered a total of 21,084 infections as of May 18, an average of almost 300 cases per day, and 680 deaths.
In the last 24 hours, 205 new cases of cholera were reported, the majority in the province of Namibe (86 cases), followed by the provinces of Cuanza Sul (42) and Benguela (28), with two people dying of cholera during this period.
Since the beginning of the outbreak, the disease has spread throughout the country, already affecting 18 of the 22 provinces, with Luanda province reporting the highest number of cases (6,509), followed by Benguela (4,565), Bengo (2,995), Cuanza Norte (2,093), Icolo and Bengo (1,183) and Cuanza Sul (1,125).
Luanda also records the highest number of deaths (211), followed by Bengo province, with 118 deaths.
In the last 24 hours, 255 people were discharged and 475 people are hospitalized with cholera.
