Cabo Verde Launches Event-Based Surveillance Guidelines

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Health Minister Jorge Figueiredo said this Friday in Praia that the introduction of Event-Based Surveillance represents “a significant advance” in relation to traditional indicator-based surveillance, and will allow the country to act more effectively.

“Indeed, the introduction of Event-Based Surveillance in Cabo Verde could represent a significant advance in our ability to detect early and respond effectively and efficiently to outbreaks and other threats to public health,” the minister pointed out.

According to the same source, this new strategy will also reinforce the implementation of an approach to health, already implemented in the country since 2017, promoting the integration of the areas of human, animal and environmental health, taking into account the growing occurrence of emerging and re-emerging diseases.

Jorge Figueiredo also emphasized complementary initiatives, such as the “Guardians of Health” project, an initiative that promotes and reinforces the involvement of communities in active surveillance, and contributes to the development of the early warning system.

In conclusion, the minister added that, with this new framework, Cape Verde consolidates its position as a regional reference in preparing for and responding to health emergencies, investing in a more resilient, robust health system aligned with sustainable development objectives.

In his speech, the regional director of the West Africa Coordination Center of the Africa CDC, Alinon Kokou, highlighted the joint and progressive work carried out with the Cape Verdean authorities over the past year, stressing that this new technical instrument will allow early detection and rapid management of public health emergencies.

“This document is the result of a collective effort and will be a key piece in strengthening surveillance systems in the country,” he said.

The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), national and international experts in the areas of human, animal and environmental health, and reinforced Cape Verde’s commitment to an integrated and sustainable approach in the field of health security.
