Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of the Sea said he hopes that the new board of directors of the Special Economic Maritime Zone in São Vicente (ZEEMSV) will promote investments that translate into results and transform Cape Verde into a platform in the mid-Atlantic.

Jorge Santos spoke to the press after inaugurating the new board of directors of ZEEMSV, led by Aníbal Fonseca, former president of the Porto Novo City Council.

According to the minister, the sea already represents 19 percent (%) of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), behind tourism, which corresponds to 25%, therefore, he considered, the sea has “enormous growth potential”.

“We have this ZEEMSV strategy, which is to develop this maritime economy and transform Cape Verde into this circular economy platform in the Middle Atlantic. And this is the main challenge of this board of directors”, highlighted the governor.

According to Jorge Santos, the new leadership of ZEEMSV will not only manage the Integrated Tourism Development Zones, but also develop a strategy for using the Lazareto Industrial Zone, promote investments in the fishing sector, with its industrialization and develop business with the modernization of ports in terms of bunkering, transshipment and also tourism.

In turn, the new chairman of the board of directors, Aníbal Fonseca, said that he will make every effort to meet the goals established for the aforementioned economic zone.

“ZEEMSV will be a work and vision, a true engine of economic and social development, a concrete example of how Cape Verde can grow in a sustainable, inclusive and resilient way”, he promised.

The same source requested institutional support from the Government and entities under the supervision of the Ministry of the Sea, the Municipal Council of São Vicente and other relevant ministries so that ZEEMSV can be a space for convergence between the public and private sectors, academia and civil society.
