Africa-Press – Cape verde. Water production and distribution on São Vicente Island has been completely paralyzed since dawn due to damage caused by flooding in the João Ribeiro catchment area.
This information was released today in an interview with Rádio Morabeza by Electra’s executive director, Antão Cruz. According to Cruz, a landslide near the catchment station isolated the infrastructure, preventing the collection of seawater needed for the desalination process.
“Regarding water production, the situation is truly complicated because, due to the flooding that occurred in the João Ribeiro catchment area, we are unable to collect seawater for the island’s production. This means we are not producing, and as the hours have passed, we have exhausted all available stock for distribution. At this time, we also have no water being distributed. We are making every effort to get the catchment station back online and, from there, restore production,” he stated.
According to the executive director, there is no record of “major damage,” although some pipelines were exposed.
Electra states that technical teams are working to restore the station’s operations, but there is currently no estimated timeframe for the situation to return to normal.
Antão Cruz urges the public to use water wisely during this period.
“We ask people to use water wisely, conserving it whenever possible, because when distribution resumes, the process will follow its natural course. At this time, we are unable to provide a time or date for normalization, as the work requires great dedication. We are talking about submerged electrical equipment,” he warned.
