Africa-Press – Cape verde. President José Maria Neves stated that if failures that contributed to the disaster in São Vicente are confirmed, they must be identified to prevent a recurrence.
The Head of State was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a press conference held Monday afternoon, in which he reacted to the tragedy that is currently ravaging the island.
“At this moment, the most important thing is to assist the population in the face of the emergency situation. If there were failures, they must be identified and serve as a reference to prevent them from happening again. But today, the priority is to support those who are distressed, whether due to the loss of loved ones or significant material damage,” he said.
Neves called for strong coordination between the city hall, the government, and all sectors of society, in a true djunta mon, to confront the crisis.
“This is a time for strong collaboration between the city council and the government, and for the contribution of all the island’s forces—unions, NGOs, churches, political parties, businesses, and individual citizens—to, in a grand concerted effort, address this difficult and complex situation for the island of São Vicente,” he emphasized.
The President also reinforced the importance of solidarity and resource mobilization.
“We must remain steadfast and calm, mobilizing all resources and capabilities to care for and protect the most vulnerable people and businesses that have suffered losses, at a particularly difficult time for Cape Verde,” he appealed.
The heavy rain that hit São Vicente has already caused seven deaths and missing people, in addition to significant material damage.
