Africa-Press – Cape verde. The National Director of Education said this Monday that the literacy rate for those aged 15 and over is 88.8 percent, while for those aged 15 to 24, it is 99 percent.
According to Adriano Moreno, these figures place Cape Verde in an advantageous position compared to neighboring countries and on par with medium-high development countries.
He acknowledged, however, that the country has not yet achieved its goals of 100% literacy for its population.
“We are working every year in all municipalities, with basic education classes for young people and adults, so that we can achieve the goal of 100% literacy,” stated Adriano Moreno, who believes that literacy is not just about learning to read and write.
The National Director of Education made these remarks on the sidelines of an activity held in Praia to mark International Literacy Day, which this year is being held under the theme: “Literacy in the Digital Age.”
“We are also deeply committed to modernizing literacy curricula to achieve this [literacy in the digital age],” noted Adriano Moreno.
The same source added that, in this regard, the evaluation of the basic education curriculum for young people and adults has already begun, introducing foreign languages, similar to what is already happening in primary and secondary education.
He added that technologies will also be introduced so that students now enrolled in basic education for young people and adults can also acquire skills in digital tools.
Confronted with the issue of those who lack proficiency with digital tools, he clarified that, with the curricular reform that will be implemented in basic education for young people and adults, the conditions will be created for teachers and students to master the basics of these tools.
“We will be equipping institutions that provide basic education for young people and adults, where they cannot use the equipment at the school where they operate. We will also be able to provide some equipment to these young people and adults, and we will also be providing parallel training so they can master digital tools,” said Adriano Moreno.
The National Director of Education concluded that today, even for those who are already literate, if they don’t master digital tools, “they run the risk of becoming digitally illiterate.”
