Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, sent a letter of environmental awareness to his counterparts from 20 African countries bordering the Atlantic, proposing the strengthening of bilateral and regional cooperation with a view to a joint response to the challenges affecting marine ecosystems.

According to a statement from the Presidency of the Republic, the Head of State’s initiative is part of an international mobilization effort for the preservation of the oceans, highlighting the importance of concerted action among the countries of the region in protecting natural resources and combating environmental threats.

The decision follows the recent presidential trip, on March 21st, to the Santa Luzia Integral Nature Reserve, considered the largest protected marine area in Cape Verde.

The visit was carried out within the scope of José Maria Neves’s duties as Patron of the Ocean Decade Alliance and Champion of the African Union for the Preservation of Africa’s Natural and Cultural Heritage.

According to the Presidency, the letter sent to African Heads of State emphasizes the urgency of intensifying cooperation to address challenges such as marine pollution, overfishing, climate change, and the degradation of coastal ecosystems.

The document also reinforces the need for knowledge sharing, the development of common policies, and the mobilization of resources to ensure the sustainability of the oceans and the preservation of the natural heritage for future generations.
