Africa-Press – Cape verde. The parliamentary leader of the Movement for Democracy (MpD) today considered the issue of his party’s absolute majority to be “a non-issue” in the context of the rejection of the parliamentary agenda, and attributed the impasse to the PAICV.
In statements to the press, he stated that the parliament, composed of 72 deputies, requires prior consensus, recalling that the agenda is defined in the conference of representatives before being taken to the plenary.
Celso Ribeiro made these remarks when approached by the press about the suspension of the last plenary session of this legislature due to a lack of quorum.
The MpD holds an absolute majority in parliament, but many of its deputies did not attend this session, so the president called a new one for this Thursday, the 9th.
According to Celso Ribeiro, there was a prior understanding between the parties, but “strangely” the PAICV opted for abstention, which ultimately prevented approval.
The parliamentary leader of the MpD emphasized that both his party and the UCID deputies voted in favor of allowing the session to proceed, accusing the PAICV of attempting to obstruct the functioning of Parliament.
“This is the third time this political force has blocked the normal functioning of the institution,” he stated.
He described the attitude as “irresponsible and disrespectful” towards the population and the parliamentary institution, warning that blocking institutions could affect the country’s confidence among international partners.
Despite the situation, he guaranteed that the MpD will continue to make efforts to ensure the normal functioning of Parliament, admitting that new decisions should emerge from the conference of representatives, which has since been rescheduled.
