Africa-Press – Cape verde. Construction workers on Brava Island have expressed concern about the recent increase in the price of cement, which rose from 1,265 escudos to 1,500 escudos, considering the increase excessive and potentially negative for the construction sector.
In an interview with the media, contractor Antônio Alves stated that the change could cause losses, especially for projects already budgeted and underway based on the previous price of the material.
According to him, while new budgets may reflect the increase, the main concern lies with contracts already signed.
“Now, the projects already underway, based on the old price of cement, are at stake,” he emphasized.
Alves also criticized the way the increase was implemented, arguing that there should have been prior communication to professionals in the sector.
According to the contractor, the explanation given by the cement distributor on Brava Island, Dina Vicente, points to an increase applied by the supplier company Cimpor.
Even so, he considers the justification insufficient. “The price of this product suddenly increased excessively, and we, with ongoing construction projects, are going to suffer. Fifteen hundred reais per bag is too much,” he emphasized.
In turn, bricklayer Euclides Garcia shares the same opinion, warning that the increase will have direct repercussions on the cost of construction.
According to him, the sudden increase further aggravates the difficulties in the sector.
“On the other islands there are several cement suppliers and there are more options. Here there is only one supplier, which means the price is always higher. With this increase, costs rise even more,” he explained.
The professional added that, although there are still some works in progress, the uncertainty regarding price evolution worries the workers.
“We do have some work, but with this increase we don’t know what might happen in the future, as the price is a bit exaggerated,” he concluded.
