2nd Edition Chess Tournament in honor of Gabriel Borges ends this weekend

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The final disputes of the 2nd Edition Chess Tournament in honor of Gabriel Borges, which takes place at Grémio Desportivo Amarante, in São Vicente, start today and last until tomorrow night.

This 2nd Edition of the Chess Tournament, in posthumous homage to Gabriel Borges, who was the eighth president of Grémio Desportivo do Amarante and an activist, social cultural and sportsman, has the participation of six teams.

Two from Amarante and one each from Mindelense, Falcões do Norte and Escola Salesiana. The latter enters the tournament for the first time.

After the start of the competition, last weekend, the tournament enters its final stretch at the end of today’s afternoon, with the winners being announced tomorrow, Saturday, 18th. Qualification is done by teams and respective scores.

Who was Gabriel Borges

Gabriel Borges, a unique and much loved figure on the island of São Vicente, was a man of sport and culture, an activist. He was even linked to the theater, before independence, in the 50s, when Grémio Desportivo do Amarante itself took the theater to the stage of Eden Park.

Born on March 18, 1924, having died in 2017, aged 93, Gabriel Borges was the 8th President of Grémio Desportivo Amarante, a club he helped found with Beto Fernandes, Evandro de Matos, among others. Having even been together with Evandro de Matos, they were the faces of the team that led the so-called modernization phase of Amarante today.

Remember that Grémio Desportivo Amarante was founded on June 2, 1936, currently comprising the modalities of Football, Chess and Handball.
