Association Launches Public Sign Language Training Course

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Association of Families and Friends of the Deaf is promoting a sign language training course open to the public with the goal of facilitating gestural communication and the inclusion of deaf youth in public and private institutions.

In an interview with Inforpress, the president of the association, Ângela Lopes, stated that the training will begin on Friday the 13th and continue until the end of May, totaling 30 hours, distributed in weekly two-hour meetings.

As she explained, classes will be held on Fridays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Escola Brasil, in the Achada Santo Antônio neighborhood, allowing more people with different schedules to participate.

According to Angela Lopes, the initiative aims to maximize sign language skills, ensuring that deaf people have access to quality service in various public and private institutions.

“The more people who master sign language, the more included deaf youth will be in all social and professional environments,” she stated, reaffirming the association’s commitment to promoting the social, educational, and professional inclusion of deaf people in Cape Verde.

According to the same source, the training is open to everyone, regardless of schooling or occupation, and aims to facilitate communication and inclusion of deaf people throughout the country.

The course will be structured practically, allowing participants to learn through conversation and everyday situations, and will include evaluation and certification. The association added that the perspective is to expand the training program to other islands.

Angela Lopes said, on the other hand, that the greatest difficulty faced is the scarcity of interpreters and professionals trained in sign language, which, in her view, makes this training even more necessary.

“Registration is open at a cost of R$ 500 reais, with the complete training offered for R$ 5,000 reais, payable in two installments of R$ 2,500 reais,” it was reported.

The Association of Families and Friends of the Deaf was recently created, with its publication in the Official Gazette on November 4, 2025, with the objective of supporting families and friends of deaf people in their inclusion.
