Africa-Press – Cape verde. The World Bank (WB) classified Cape Verde’s performance in implementing projects financed by the institution as “above average” compared to other countries on Tuesday, highlighting the archipelago’s speed and effectiveness, especially in emergency situations.

The assessment was made in Praia by Marcos Chiliatto, Executive Director for Brazil and a group of Latin American and Caribbean countries, after a meeting with Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva.

The meeting took place as part of the first official mission of World Bank Executive Directors to Cape Verde, which took place from September 5th to 9th.

“The easiest thing is to compare it with other countries. And Cape Verde’s level and pace of execution is above the average of other countries. Cape Verde is a country that has been executing its projects well,” stated Marcos Chiliatto.

The official emphasized that the archipelago has responded quickly and effectively, particularly in emergency situations, such as the rains that recently affected the island of São Vicente.

“(…) Cape Verde is a country that responds quickly. In the case of a disaster, the country was able to respond very quickly. Disbursements were made in less than 48 hours,” stated Marcos Chilliatto, who added that the delegation was in São Vicente to establish direct contact with affected families and document the impacts of climate change on small island states.

He recalled that the World Bank was one of the first partners to provide immediate support to São Vicente, with US$10 million in financing through a rapid disaster response mechanism that Cape Verde had already pre-approved.

On Sal Island, the group visited the airport, roads, and the Santa Maria pier, which is undergoing rehabilitation.

Marcos Chiliatto also assured that the World Bank will continue to support the country, not only in emergency situations, but also during recovery and reconstruction.

The institution is currently preparing a new multi-year cooperation framework in dialogue with the government, which will define Cape Verde’s future development priorities.

In this, the first official visit by World Bank executive directors to Cape Verde, the delegation visited the islands of Sal, São Vicente, Santo Antão, and Santiago to monitor infrastructure, tourism, blue economy, health, and human capital development projects.
