Africa-Press – Cape verde. This morning, the 7th, Praia City Council proceeded with the demolition of the block wall that was being built on the descent of “O Poeta”, in Achada Santo António. The construction, according to the president, was clandestine. The wall was being contested intensely on social media.
The block wall that was being built on the descent of Achada Santo António, on the “O Poeta” ramp that gives access to Chã de Areia, was demolished this morning, the 7th, by order of the Municipality of Praia.
The construction, more than 20 meters long, was widely criticized earlier this week by citizens from Praia and beyond, who questioned its legality, in addition to landscaping, urbanistic issues and access to the enjoyment of public space, since it hid all the views of Gamboa and the surrounding area.
Chamber guarantees that it did not authorize the wall
This morning, in statements to Rádio de Cabo Verde, the mayor of Praia, Francisco Carvalho, assured that the municipality “did not authorize any construction of a wall on the site”.
“We can say that this wall is completely clandestine, that the owners and the construction company, the architects, decided on their own initiative to build it there on the public road”, said the person in charge, who activated the support of the National Police to accompany the demolition, the from 9 am this Tuesday, 7.
In the place, recalled the mayor, there is already a wall, built several years ago, under which there was a wire fence.
For its extension, those responsible for a work under construction, on the slope, tore out the wire fence and added blocks on top of the existing wall.
social pressure
The construction of the wall deserved severe disapproval from several citizens residing in the capital, and beyond, who promptly questioned its origin and legality.
“We are not going to accept this urban crime that is being committed against Praia anymore, as if the savagery they are already doing with the seafront were not enough, blocking all the view of our beautiful bays”, wrote José Pina, in a publication by Cristina Fontes Lima, who also criticized the intervention.
With that construction, noted the former candidate for the City Council of the capital Romeu di Lourdes, the route “lost all its wonder, both pedestrians and those in the car, lost the beautiful view of Porto da Praia, of the Historic Center of Plateau , the Ilhéu de Santa Maria, and the entire surrounding context”, as well as “the fresh wind that comes from Praia da Gamboa”.
