Africa-Press – Cape verde. Black smoke rose again from the Vatican chimney today at 11:50 a.m. local time (10:50 a.m. in Lisbon) in the first vote of the morning on the second day of the conclave to indicate that the cardinal electors had failed to choose a new pope.
After a first and only vote on Wednesday, the 133 cardinal electors gathered again this morning in the Sistine Chapel to choose a new leader of the Catholic Church.
In the afternoon, the cardinals will vote once again, with the result being known at 7 pm (6 pm in Lisbon).
If a name obtains a two-thirds majority, or 89 votes, the world will be immediately informed by white smoke coming out of the chimney installed on the roof of the Sistine Chapel, the result of the burning of the ballots.
Otherwise, it will be black smoke every other vote, or around 12 noon (11 am in Lisbon) and 7 pm (6 pm), for the remaining days of the conclave until a successor to Francis, who died on April 21 at age 88, is chosen.
The duration of a conclave is difficult to predict, but in the last two it took just two days to elect Benedict XVI in 2005 and Francis in 2013.
Among the favorites for the election are, among others, the Filipino Luis Antonio Tagle, the Italians Pietro Parolin and Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Maltese Mario Grech and the French Jean-Marc Aveline.
