Sotavento Chamber of Commerce Calls for Public Policies to Keep Young People in the Country

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Sotavento Chamber of Commerce (CCS) today defended the creation of “more comprehensive and attractive” public policies to retain young people, highlighting that the country’s development requires “more than salaries”.

“CCS already has some ideas for public policies that are necessary for development, because it’s not just about salaries, we need a much more attractive ecosystem so that young people can stay in the country,” said Marcos Rodrigues.

The association leader spoke to Inforpress about the meeting this Thursday, the 8th, between the CCS and the trade union centers UNTC-CS and CCSL and highlighted that this is yet another initiative by the institution to collect and share relevant information with social partners, with a view to promoting joint solutions to the challenges of the Cape Verdean labor market.

The meeting’s agenda includes four central themes: the implementation of the national minimum wage, social benefits for workers, especially access to medical coverage, compliance with legal obligations by employers, the proposal of measures to retain young workers in the country and the promotion of professional training in companies.

He emphasized that all issues are of “extreme importance”, but the issue of retaining staff in Cape Verde “is particularly urgent”, taking into account the growing emigration of qualified young people, as he indicated.

“We want to discuss with the unions the reasons that lead young people to leave the country and see if, in addition to salaries, there are other factors such as access to health, housing, security and opportunities that are influencing these decisions,” he highlighted.

The official reiterated that the CCS is interested in promoting a continuous dialogue with the unions, recognizing that social peace and understanding between employers and workers’ representatives are crucial for a productive and fair environment.

“We will continue to promote these spaces for dialogue and collaboration, as we believe that only with a more attractive and balanced work ecosystem will we be able to stop the flight of talent and ensure sustainable development for Cape Verde,” he concluded.
