Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean football coach, Bubista, asked the country for unity this Monday in order to guarantee the unprecedented qualification for a World Cup in 2026.
“ We have to unite our country more and more ”, asked Bubista, speaking to the Lusa agency, in the city of Praia, at the reception of the Cape Verdean Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, for the Cape Verdean team.
The ‘Blue Sharks’ achieved their best participation ever in the African Cup of Nations (CAN2023) this year, by reaching the quarter-finals in their fourth appearance, a phase in which they were eliminated by South Africa.
After this feat, the ‘Blue Sharks’ focus on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, whose next games are scheduled for June.
After two rounds, Cape Verde remains in second place in Group D, with the same four points as Cameroon and Libya, while Angola has two, Mauritius one and Swaziland has yet to score.
Despite recognizing that the Cape Verdean team is “on a good path”, Bubista said that the objective is to “continue to improve, always”.
In addition to qualifying for the World Cup, this year also begins qualifying for CAN2025, so the ‘helmsman’ of the Cape Verde team has assumed the ambition of recruiting players “in quantity and with quality” to face the best African teams and “power win.”
The Cape Verdean team begins today, in the city of Praia, the preparation stage for the FIFA Series, a pilot project to give the opportunity to lower-rated teams from different confederations to play private matches against each other, in a single country.
Cape Verde is in series A of the tournament, with games in Saudi Arabia, in a group that will face opponents Cambodia, Equatorial Guinea and Guyana.
The call-up will be announced today, with the selector saying that a dozen young players will make their debut in the national team.
