Africa-Press – Cape verde. The dredging process at the fishing pier in the port of Vale dos Cavaleiros began on Monday, the 26th, to create better navigability conditions for open-mouth fishing vessels.
Dredging, with a focus on dragging the pier, is a long-standing demand of local fishermen.
The president of the São Filipe Fishermen and Fishmongers Association, Jorge de Pina, expressed satisfaction with the start of the work and highlighted the importance of this action for the sector and for the safety of fishermen.
According to the president of the association, a dredging operation had not been carried out at the fishing pier for over a year, as the last one took place in February 2024.
He requested the creation of a permanent team to carry out periodic maintenance, since the accumulation of sand is a natural and recurring process in this port infrastructure.
The operation is being led by the Association of Municipalities of Fogo and Brava, with the support of the City of Mosteiros, which provided the necessary equipment.
The sand removed will be distributed among the island’s three municipalities to be used in public and municipal works.
During his last visit to the island, about six months ago, the Minister of the Sea, Jorge Santos, reaffirmed the commitment of his ministry and the government to ensuring that fishermen can operate safely, entering and leaving the port without impediments caused by silting.
