DNRE Suspends Tax Deadlines After August 11 Storm

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The National Directorate of State Revenue (DNRE) of Cape Verde announced today the temporary suspension of August tax deadlines for taxpayers in municipalities affected by the storm that caused nine deaths.

“Extraordinary tax measures will be applied to taxpayers affected by the impacts of the tropical wave’s passage recorded in the tax offices of these municipalities,” the DNRE said.

The measure follows the government’s six-month state of emergency decreed in São Vicente, Porto Novo (Santo Antão), and the two municipalities of São Nicolau.

“The August tax deadlines do not apply to affected taxpayers and are temporarily suspended,” it said.

“This measure aims to ensure peace of mind and tax justice for affected taxpayers,” it added.

The August 11 storm caused damage to three islands in the archipelago.

In São Vicente, the most affected region, nine people died, two are missing, and neighborhoods were flooded, with damage to roads, homes, bridges, businesses, and power lines, as well as vehicles being swept out to sea.

On the island of Santo Antão, the storm caused landslides and isolated areas due to road closures, damaging water, sanitation, and power lines.

In São Nicolau, damage was reported to homes, roads, and public infrastructure.

The government will use resources from the National Emergency Fund and the Sovereign Emergency Fund, created in 2019 to respond to natural disasters and external economic shocks.

The strategic plan provides support for the families of victims, including emergency income, pensions, temporary resettlement, and housing rehabilitation.

Small businesses, informal traders, fishermen, and farmers are also covered through grants, subsidized credit lines, and tax benefits.

Immediate priorities include clearing roads, rebuilding retaining walls, repairing water and power lines, stabilizing sanitation, and strengthening the civil protection system.

The law also establishes an exceptional public procurement regime to accelerate construction.

A damage assessment is also being conducted to structure a recovery and resilience-building program, including roads, housing, waterfronts, drainage systems, and public and private facilities.
