Africa-Press – Cape verde. EDEC announced that, starting today, four thousand more LED street lights will be installed throughout the country, reinforcing the project to modernize public lighting. The initiative has already implemented 12 thousand street lights in Praia and Santa Maria, with a total investment of more than 27 million escudos.

“Starting today, Monday, November 25, 2024, another 4,000 LED street lights will be installed throughout the country, complementing the 12,000 already implemented in cities such as Praia, Santa Maria and other urban centers”, reads a statement released today.

The project is structured in three main components, with a total value of 27,442,035 escudos and is divided into three components, the first being the Brava 100% LED project, whose objective is to modernize all of the island’s public lighting with 1,100 LED street lights, completely replacing traditional systems.

The total cost for this project, according to the same source, is 7,075,650 escudos.

Another component is the 100% LED City of Mangui and Town of Tchon Bom, Tarrafal de Santiago project. For Mangui, there are 728 lighting points with LED lighting and for Tchon Bom, 490 points with LED lighting, totaling 7,947,650 escudos.

The third and final component is the reinforcement of IP in LED in the North and South Regions, which includes the installation of 1,682 LED lighting in strategic urban centers on the islands of São Vicente, Santo Antão, São Nicolau, Sal, Maio, Santiago and Fogo, worth 12,418,735 escudos.

“This project will bring concrete and measurable benefits: a 60% reduction in energy consumption, equivalent to 613,200 kWh/year. A reduction in CO2 emissions of 329 tons per year. Annual economic benefits of 3,263 thousand Cape Verdean escudos from the reduction of emissions. In addition to contributing to a more sustainable environment, improved public lighting promotes greater safety, well-being and appreciation of localities”, it states.
