Africa-Press – Cape verde. The executive director of the Cape Verde Electricity Distribution Company (EDEC), Osvaldo Silva, states that work continues on the ground to restore normal power grids in São Vicente “as soon as possible.”
In an interview with Rádio Morabeza, the manager assured that service will be restored as soon as conditions permit, ensuring the safety of workers and the public.
“For safety reasons, we have been working intensely since three in the morning to assess the conditions for restoring service, but unfortunately, there are multiple outages in almost all areas. The transformer stations are flooded with water, and the outages are being repaired, but restoration also depends on better weather conditions and the drainage of water within the substations. Even so, we believe that, over the course of today, we can improve and restore normal service,” he states.
According to EDEC, heavy rains, strong winds, and landslides recorded overnight caused outages in the electricity distribution and public lighting networks, especially in São Vicente.
Teams continue to work in the field to repair the medium and low voltage networks, and for safety reasons, some circuits remain offline.
“Obviously, in a situation like this, priorities must be established. Even when we left the hospital, the situation was delicate, but we have already managed to restore power. We continue to work tirelessly at all transformer stations and locations to achieve this goal,” he explained.
The executive director also warned people to stay safe and avoid traveling in high-risk areas.
“We ask that people and vehicles stay away from power lines, especially those that are on the ground or submerged. Safety is our priority. Obviously, we can’t reach all areas of São Vicente at the same time, but we’re working on it. Wherever there’s a downed cable or pole, it’s crucial that the public stay away to avoid accidents,” he warns.
