Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government declared a state of emergency today in São Vicente and Santo Antão following the passage of a tropical storm accompanied by heavy rains and flooding, which, during the early hours of this Monday, caused fatalities and property damage.
According to the Executive, there are also reports of missing persons.
The Government extended its condolences to the bereaved families and expressed concern for the missing.
“The Government has already declared a state of emergency so that it can activate the National Emergency Fund to address the damage caused to roads, streets, and other infrastructure and assist people in difficult situations caused by the severe weather,” the statement reads.
The government guarantees that the National Civil Protection Service was immediately activated to coordinate emergency response actions.
Additionally, the company Infraestruturas de Cabo Verde began mobilizing resources, in collaboration with local construction companies, to implement urgent intervention actions.
According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG), between midnight and 5:00 a.m. this morning, the 11th, São Vicente recorded 192.3 millimeters of rainfall, resulting from the passage of a tropical wave that intensified within a low-pressure center over the Western Barlavento region. At least six people died.
