ERIS Bans Ingredient Used in Gel Polishes from September

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Starting September 1, 2025, the ban on the use of the ingredient Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO) in cosmetic products, especially gel nail polish, will come into effect. The substance is known for allowing products to dry quickly under ultraviolet light and increase the durability of nail products.

The decision was announced by the Independent Health Regulatory Authority (ERIS), following the update of European Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009, which has already been adapted to the Cape Verdean legal system through the entity’s Resolution No. 02/2019.

TPO was recently included on the list of prohibited ingredients after being classified as a substance toxic to reproduction, category 1B.

Although TPO is not commonly found in everyday cosmetics, such as creams or soaps, its presence in products used by beauty professionals led to the adoption of this preventive measure to protect public health.

ERIS informs that economic operators in the sector must stop marketing any product containing TPO, and that professionals, such as estheticians, must cease using it.

The entity requests the collaboration of all participants in the cosmetics sector—operators, professionals, consumers, and the media—to ensure compliance with the regulations and ensure the safety of the products available on the market.
