Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Cape Verdean Basketball Federation (FCBB), Hélder Gonçalves, announced this Monday in Praia that the new coach will be presented this week, following Emanuel Trovoada’s decision not to continue in the position.
In a press conference, the leader confirmed that the choice has already been made, but refused to reveal the name, even with the insistence of journalists, stating that the name will be revealed “on the Federation’s official channels”.
Gonçalves clarified that the future coach will be responsible for defining and selecting the players available and committed to the national team.
The president recalled that Emanuel Trovoada publicly announced his decision to leave the coaching position on August 21st, after the game against Angola, a position he said he maintained even after a meeting with the board held on September 20th.
“We respect the former coach’s decision and have already settled the outstanding payments for the period in which he served,” said Hélder Gonçalves. The head of the FCBB (Cape Verde Basketball Federation) said that the new coach will take over the team’s preparation for the upcoming qualifying windows, emphasizing that the goal is to keep Cape Verde “active, competitive, and worthy of the trust of the Cape Verdean people.”
On the occasion, the president also took the opportunity to call for unity around the sport and stressed that the board’s focus is to strengthen the stability and prestige of national basketball.
Hélder Gonçalves’s administration had been elected president of the FCBB in April of this year, but on November 1st it was removed in an extraordinary general assembly, promoted by the General Assembly’s board, with José Semedo being elected to assume the Management Committee.
He promised to “restore the credibility of the sport and prepare the national team, aiming for qualification for the 2027 World Cup.”
The president of the Cape Verdean Basketball Federation (FCBB) revealed to Inforpress that he has filed a lawsuit to contest his alleged dismissal and that he remains the “legitimate leader” while awaiting the court’s decision.
