French Development Agency plans to "resume and expand" cooperation with Cape Verde - Director General

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The French Development Agency (AFD) plans to “resume and expand” cooperation with Cape Verde, its director-general Rémy Rioux announced today in Praia.

“I see that the ratios are improving, that the situation is improving. These are, therefore, very positive signs that we can resume and expand our cooperation”, said the official in statements to journalists, after an audience with the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves.

“Our relations have been reduced due to the financial situation of Cape Verde, which has been severely affected by several successive shocks and, in particular, recently, like all countries in the world, by Covid-19”, he justified the reduction, in recent years, of cooperation with the archipelago.

He added that Cape Verde’s debt increased because the population had to be protected, aggravated, as he noted, by the war in Ukraine.

Regarding the meeting with the President of the Republic, he said that it served to talk about the “special” moment of renewal of relations between Europe and Africa and about the special role that Cape Verde plays in this international effort.

The Director General of AFD announced the participation of José Maria Neves in the United Nations Summit, to be held next year in Paris, France.

This afternoon Rémy Rioux, who is in Cape Verde to participate in the conference on African Democracy, will meet with the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva.
