Africa-Press – Cape verde. The National Statistics Institute (INE) reported today that the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita increased from 465,120 escudos in 2022 to 500,852 escudos in 2023, and that this growth reflects the positive evolution of the national economy, whose total GDP reached 254,973 million escudos, 8.2% more than in the previous year.
According to the INE, GDP data by islands revealed that the island of Santiago remained the country’s main economic center, contributing 50.8% of GDP, equivalent to 129,412 million escudos. São Vicente and Sal followed with weights of 18.5% (47,096 million cruzeiros) and 12.5% (31,879 million), respectively.
In terms of economic growth per island, Sal stood out with a 29.5% increase in its GDP, followed by São Nicolau with 29.1%, Fogo with 10.4%, São Vicente with 9.6%, Boa Vista with 6.2%, Santiago with 4.7% and Maio with 2.4%. On the other hand, Santo Antão and Brava were the only islands to record negative variations, with falls of 4.5% and 7.0%, respectively.
Sal was also the island that contributed most to the positive variation in national GDP in 2023, with 3.1 percentage points (p.p.), ahead of Santiago which registered 2.5 p.p.
Regarding GDP per capita, the data reveal regional disparities. The islands of Sal, Boa Vista and São Vicente recorded the highest values in 2023, while Fogo, Santo Antão and Brava had the lowest levels.
