JPAI asks for clarification on alleged dismissal of 600 more nurses

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Youth of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (JPAI) denounced, this Thursday, 25, that the Government announced the dismissal of more than 600 nurses. He therefore asks the Minister of Health and the Prime Minister for explanations.

Eder Brito, a member of the JPAI National Political Commission, spoke at a press conference, from Mindelo, criticizing the executive’s decision, despite a “tireless dedication to the service of the Cape Verdean nation”, in the fight against the covid-19 pandemic. 19.

“It is surprising that, despite this tireless dedication, professionalism, days of isolation, with, sometimes, one nurse per prophylactic isolation center, with nurses who, due to their intense professional exposure to the virus, were at least three sometimes infected with covid-19 and sometimes with severe symptoms”, he recalled.

Request for clarification

Brito stressed that the moment is one of “extreme national difficulty” due to the inflation of prices of essential products and services, so he asked for clarification from the Minister of Health, Arlindo do Rosário, and the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva.

He also called for the measure to be rethought, so that it is not the government that “instigates and promotes job insecurity, much less youth unemployment”.

“The present measure demonstrates a tremendous lack of sensitivity on the part of the Government, especially the Minister of Health with his own class”, he considered.

Service delivery?

He questioned the extent to which the relationship between nurses and health care was “a mere provision of service”, stressing that the majority had the obligation to remain in a specific workplace, with pre-defined working hours, and some , even took a vacation, despite using the terminology rest.

These arguments, he concluded, are exposed in an open letter sent to the Ministry of Health, by the nurses, with claims for arrears of wages, paid vacations, lack of rest and weekly days off, physical and mental exhaustion, work overload, services performed without pay.

Costa also claims in the letter about the lack of drug subsistence and specialized medical services, precarious conditions of services, exposure to damage and injuries to individual health and new competitions, among others.
