Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde has started a pilot project to certify plastic credits. The initiative, led by the startup C-Plastic in partnership with local organizations in São Vicente, Boa Vista and Santiago, has already started to digitally record the amounts of plastic collected in clean-up actions, combining environmental innovation, community participation and social impact.
According to a statement from C-Plastic, this initial phase aims to implement a plastic credit certification system, which will allow quantifying, validating and tracking the environmental and social impact of the actions carried out.
Through this system, it is expected that local communities will be financially rewarded for their efforts towards the circular economy and the preservation of the ocean and coastal areas.
On Santiago Island, the pilot project is part of a more comprehensive program, funded by Australian Aid, under the Direct Aid Program (DAP 2024-2025).
With this support, the Association for the Development of São Francisco has strengthened its capacity for local intervention, promoting cleaning actions, transforming plastic waste into school furniture, organizing workshops and implementing the certification system.
The goal is to collect at least 1,000 kg of plastic, transform the waste into 200 recycled school chairs and distribute them to schools in the community, directly benefiting around 450 students.
The program also includes training and technical qualification activities for teachers, students and community members, environmental awareness campaigns, modernization of the Ekonatura Ecocenter and installation of a continuous monitoring and evaluation system.
The C-Plastic team will be on the island of Santiago between June 16th and 20th to promote a series of training sessions and workshops within the scope of the project “Recycling and Sustainable Restoration for School Communities in Cape Verde”.
On June 19th, at 4pm, there will be training at the Escola Não Agrupada de São Francisco (EBO): Introduction to the Circular Economy and Plastic Credits and on June 20th, at 8:30am, a beach clean-up action at Praia de São Francisco.
Also on June 20th, at 2:30 pm, there will be a training session at Escola Infância Feliz: Creative Recycling and Sustainability.
The statement also informs that there will be parallel workshops with practical sessions at the Ekonatura Ecocentre focusing on the restoration of school furniture, transformation of plastics into recycled boards and demonstration of the certification system.
This project is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 12 (sustainable consumption and production), SDG 13 (climate action) and SDG 14 (life below water).
“We are creating an ecosystem of social and environmental innovation in Cape Verde, based on the participation of local communities, accessible technology and a logic of shared impact. This experience can become an international reference model”, says Filipa Reis Carvalho, co-founder of C-Plastic.
