Africa-Press – Cape verde. Citizens of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) will be able to enter Portugal without prior authorization from the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) as of this Wednesday, March 1st .

The ordinance of the new model of administrative title was published today in Diário da República de Portugal, which will allow that country to automatically grant a residence permit to CPLP immigrants.

As Inforpress advances, the decision takes place within the scope of the Agreement on Mobility between the Member States of the CPLP and will last for one year.

The digital issuance of the new residence permit certificate will cost 15 euros (about 1,600 escudos), according to the ordinance that comes into force this Wednesday, March 1st.

visa facilitation regime

The Portuguese Government justifies the decision with the new regime for the entry of immigrants in Portugal, in force since November 2022 and which allows CPLP immigrants to have a visa facilitation regime in the country.

The Portuguese Executive also explained that this model for citizens of Portuguese-speaking countries will allow them “to benefit from a protection status of up to one year that allows direct access to social security, health and tax number”.

Cape Verdean government congratulates

It should be recalled that last week, the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, in statements to Inforpress, in Lisbon, welcomed the decision of the Portuguese Government to automatically grant residence permits to CPLP immigrants.

“It is a good initiative and comes, basically, from the sequence of all the work that we have been carrying out together, at the level of the CPLP for mobility within the space of our community and this mobility will create these conditions, not least because it is foreseen the issue of regularizing residence and also obtaining and facilitating entry and stay in CPLP countries”, he said.

This process will make it possible to regularize the situation of the thousands of CPLP immigrants who have expressed an interest, between 2021 and 2022, in obtaining a residence permit in Portugal.

In addition to Portugal, the CPLP comprises Cape Verde, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Equatorial Guinea and East Timor.
