Mother of Inmate Arrested for Leading Illegal Arms Trade

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Judicial Police (PJ) arrested, on Friday, May 30, a woman suspected of being behind a scheme to introduce bladed weapons into the Central Prison of São Martinho, in the city of Praia. The arrest, carried out by the Crimes Against Persons Investigation Section (SICCP), follows investigations related to a case that occurred on March 6, when a young woman was caught red-handed carrying bladed weapons during a search prior to visiting prisoners.

According to the PJ, the woman now detained, a Cape Verdean national and 44 years old, is the mother of a prisoner and would have ordered the delivery of the weapons to her son with the help of his girlfriend. The young accomplice was arrested when she tried to introduce sharp objects into the prison and has been in preventive detention ever since.

The search and seizure warrants and the arrest warrants were promoted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and carried out by the Judicial Police with authorization from the Praia District Court. As coercive measures, the prisoner’s mother was forced to periodically report to the authorities, given that she is responsible for the care of three children. The son remains in prison, awaiting trial proceedings.

The investigation is ongoing, with the aim of determining all the details of the alleged arms trafficking scheme within the prison, which raises serious concerns regarding the internal security of the prison and the effectiveness of the control mechanisms.

Two young people are arrested in São Vicente

Still within the scope of the Judicial Police’s actions, the arrest of two young people, one male and the other female, was announced in the city of Mindelo, island of São Vicente, on suspicion of sexual assault with penetration against a young male.

The arrests were carried out by the Crimes Against Persons Investigation Brigade (BICCP), as part of an ongoing criminal case. The suspects, aged between 16 and 18, were arrested outside of flagrante delicto through warrants issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Both young people were brought before the São Vicente District Court, which imposed a coercive measure banning them from leaving the country. The investigative proceedings remain the responsibility of the Civil Police.
