Mpd Acknowledges Insufficient Number of Judges for the Volume of Pending and Processed Cases

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The MpD acknowledged today that the number of magistrates and court officials is still insufficient to cope with the volume of pending and processed cases, however, it pointed out technological advances in the Justice sector.

“We acknowledge that the number of magistrates and court officials is still insufficient to cope with the volume of pending and processed cases. It is worth noting that the 11.6% increase in criminal cases registered in the Public Prosecutor’s Office services was largely due to the full registration in the system, at the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Praia district, of all cases entered in the previous judicial year, more precisely in the last five months, which were still pending registration”, said MP Jaqueline Mota, during the debate on the State of Justice.

She argued that new legislative measures are being implemented to modernize Justice in the country, and reaffirmed the MpD’s commitment to the search for more effective and faster justice.

“We are working towards the development of the Cape Verdean judicial system. Therefore, it is our role, as Members of Parliament, to urge the Government to follow the recommendations, aiming to improve productivity and combat delays. It is essential that, in compliance with the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure, we monitor the implementation of the Government’s Programme in the Justice sector”, she urged.

In her speech, the MpD member of Parliament highlighted the investments underway, as part of the Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development (PEDES II) and the Digital Transformation Strategy.

Among these investments, she mentioned the creation of the Justice Campus, with an investment of around 47 million escudos, the programme for the digitalisation of justice and the installation of the National Centre for Arbitration and Mediation, which aims to contribute to the more agile resolution of conflicts.

“We live in an increasingly connected world, where technology permeates all sectors of society”, she stated.

For next year, she pointed out an increase in the budget of the Judicial Police to 499 million escudos.

“It is essential that, in compliance with the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure, we monitor the implementation of the Government’s Programme in the Justice sector,” she stated.

The MP reiterated the MpD’s commitment to digital transformation and equal access to justice in Cape Verde.

“After all, trust in justice is built through the work of each one of us and, above all, through citizens’ trust in justice services,” she said.
