The Court of the District of Praia determined preventive detention for 44 of the 50 defendants constituted following the police operation in the neighborhood of Achada Santo António, last Thursday, 9. Among these 50 defendants, 35 were detained outside the flagrante delicto, five in flagrante delicto and 10 were already in pre-trial detention and have now been enrolled in other processes.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, as part of the investigation and following the operation carried out in December 2022 in Achada Santo António, several steps were taken, following which the Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered the arrest, outside of flagrante delicto, of 35 individuals and promoted the issuance of search and seizure warrants to several residences, more specifically in the areas of Brazil and Achada Riba, an operation now carried out last week.
In practice, of the 44 who were sent to prison, 34 were detained last Thursday, the 9th, following the mega-operation carried out by the PJ and PN, to which are added another 10 who were already in custody, but who have now been enlisted in other processes. The other six were subject to the duties of the procedural statute of defendants.
Various crimes in question
At issue, says the same source, are facts likely to integrate, for the time being, the practice of crimes of aggravated homicide, in the attempted form, gang or gang, theft, aggravated theft, damage, death threat, weapon and drug trafficking, all provided for and punished by Cape Verdean criminal law.
The operation results, according to the PGR, from the order of the Attorney General, of December 12, 2022, through which a team of magistrates from the Public Ministry and members of the National Police and the Judiciary Police was created, aiming at a quick intervention to face the wave of crime that was plaguing the city of Praia.
