PAICV Criticizes the Government for “Exceeding the Spending Limit and Neglecting the Middle Class”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The PAICV considers it worrying that the government has exceeded the spending limit approved in the 2022 General State Budget by more than 5 million contos. This position was expressed by deputy João Baptista Pereira, at a press conference held this Tuesday, for the preview of the second parliamentary session of February, which begins this Wednesday.

“The accounts raise a number of concerns for us. It is important to note at this point that the Government exceeded the expenditure limit approved in the General State Budget by more than 5 million contos. See that the State Budget is a law”, he said.

João Baptista Pereira states that the growth shown does not reach everyone and that the middle class has been sacrificed by the Government.

“Despite the growth that has been touted and eventually verified, this growth is not reaching all Cape Verdeans, which raises the problem of income destruction in Cape Verde. (…) In fact, it is enough to look at the situation of the middle class in Cape Verde, the class that has been sacrificed because the Government has a set of policies aimed at the most disadvantaged classes, and has completely neglected the middle class, which has been impoverished in recent years, without any salary increase and, therefore, without any room to improve their living standards”, he stressed.

The second plenary session of February takes place from February 26 to 28 and has as its highlight the debate with Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva on “Economic Growth and Inclusive Development”, a theme proposed by the PAICV parliamentary group.
