Africa-Press – Cape verde. The first meeting of the National Council of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), after the unprecedented victory in the local elections, is scheduled for this weekend, in the city of Praia, to discuss the calendar for the election of the new leader.
The meeting, which will take place between today and Sunday, will have as its main points the setting of the date for the election of the president of the PAICV and the preparation of the next congress. The information was given by Nuias Silva, vice-president of the party, in statements to the press on December 13, 2024.
The party leaders recently met in a Political Committee, in which they made an “extremely positive” assessment of the results of the local elections, classifying them as a reflection of the “renewed confidence” of Cape Verdeans in the PAICV.
In the local elections held on 1 December, the PAICV managed, for the first time, to change the archipelago’s local government map, winning 15 municipalities, while the Movement for Democracy (MpD), in government, was reduced to seven municipal councils.
Among the achievements is the capital, Praia, where Francisco Carvalho was re-elected with an increase in votes compared to 2020. On Thursday, Carvalho announced his candidacy for the party presidency, with a proposal for inclusive, modernizing and future-oriented management.
Nuias Silva, who leads the São Filipe City Council, expressed his willingness to lead the party, should the current president, Rui Semedo, resign from office.
