PAICV Sets Internal Elections for may 25 and National Congress for June

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The election of the new president of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) will take place on May 25. The party’s National Council is scheduled to take place on June 27, 28 and 29, the party announced today.

The dates were approved this Saturday, in an extraordinary meeting of its National Council, which took place in the city of Praia.

“Extraordinary meeting of the PAICV National Council approves the date of May 25th for the election of the Party President and the days of June 27th, 28th and 29th for the National Congress”, the party announced in a post on its Facebook page.

In an interview with the press, the party president, Rui Semedo, said that, if necessary, a second round will be held on June 1st.

“It was an environment of cordiality, openness, and directness, with clear positions. Even the non-convergent positions were expressed freely, but also cordially, and there was understanding. The ideas were confronted, but we left in a position to successfully organize the next election,” he said.

The decision comes after the Constitutional Court ruled as “unfounded” the appeal filed by the deputy secretary-general of the PAICV, Jorge Lopes, against Francisco Carvalho, in the race for the leadership of the political force.

In addition to the president of the Praia City Council, Nuías Silva, the president of the São Filipe Council, Francisco Pereira, the deputy for the European constituency, and Jorge Spencer Lima, businessman and president of the Cape Verde Chamber of Tourism, are running for the leadership of the PAICV. The elections will take place on May 25th. In June, the party will meet at the National Congress, where the political future of the entity and its preparation for the upcoming electoral challenges will be discussed.
