Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Presidency of the Republic is promoting a special agenda to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of national independence, including tributes, evocative sessions with invited heads of state, focused on the exaltation of identity, historical memory and democratic values.
According to the Presidency of the Republic, the celebrations will begin on July 4th with a session to pay tribute to the first Government and the deputies of the first legislature, scheduled for 5:00 pm, at Praia City Hall.
This, the highlight of the celebrations, aims to recognize the decisive role of those who, with courage and vision, were on the front line of the construction of the sovereign State and the consolidation of republican institutions.
“This act, which carries a strong symbolic charge, will take place “precisely on the same day, time and place as the first legislative session of the Republic of Cape Verde, when the text of the proclamation of Independence was approved, the first President of the Republic and the first Prime Minister were elected, and the State Organization Law was approved, which conferred on Amílcar Cabral the title of Founder of the Nationality”, the note says.
On the same day, at 8 pm, the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, will address a message to the Nation from the Presidential Palace.
Activities continue on Friday, July 5, Independence Day, with a thanksgiving mass at the Pro-Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace, in Praia, and in São Vicente. This is followed by the laying of a wreath at the Amílcar Cabral Memorial, in homage to the Freedom Fighters of the Fatherland.
Also in the morning, the head of state participates in the solemn session of the National Assembly.
In the early afternoon, José Maria Neves will accompany the parade of the Security Forces and Civil Society, and at 5:00 pm, he will visit with his counterparts the “Black Atlantic” exhibition, reopened in a special edition at the Residence of the Brazilian Ambassador.
This exhibition, a partnership with the Presidency of the Republic, aims to promote cultural exchange and value the Atlantic memory shared between Cape Verde and Brazil.
At 6 pm, at Largo do Quartel Jaime Mota, there will be a session to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Independence, with speeches by invited heads of state. This solemn moment will be dedicated to the reflection and reaffirmation of the founding values of the Republic, as well as its commitment to the principles of peace, multilateralism, the Democratic Rule of Law and cooperation for sustainable development.
The program also includes an official reception in the Gardens of the Presidential Palace, with artistic presentations and a celebration of the bonds of friendship and cooperation between peoples.
On Saturday, the 6th, the Head of State will meet with members of the Cape Verdean diaspora, in a gesture of recognition for the contribution and expressive mobilization of Cape Verdeans residing in different continents for the celebrations.
The celebrations will be attended by high-ranking international dignitaries, including the presidents of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
Also participating are the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed, as well as senior dignitaries from Angola, Brazil, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, among other entities from Portuguese-speaking countries and the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
