Regularization and Documentation Challenges for Immigrants

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Regularization and documentation continue to be the main challenges faced by immigrants in Cape Verde. The information was given by the president of the High Authority for Immigration, Carmem Barros, in a conversation with the press, at the closing ceremony of the Coop4Int Project – Strengthening Migrant Integration through Cooperation between Portugal and Cape Verde (Strengthening the integration of migrants through cooperation between Portugal and Cape Verde, in Portuguese).

“The legality of residence and documentation appear as the main concern, but in reality, this is inherently linked—if we can put it that way—to the type of work and professional activity of immigrants. Another important aspect is the level of education and qualifications, which are fundamental for entering the job market. If we had to list them, all of these are interconnected: the type of activity performed, whether formal or informal, because being formal facilitates compliance with the requirements for regularization and has a direct influence on this process. Entering the job market, in turn, is related to qualifications and professional certification,” Carmem Barros noted.

The Coop4Int Project lasted 44 months.

The president of the High Authority for Immigration guarantees that efforts are now focused on a second edition, with the aim of covering other dynamics and involving new countries.

“Our efforts are focused on a second edition, which, in our view, should allow us to consolidate the gains achieved in terms of the service system, strengthen this system, continue conducting studies and research, and ensure the continuity of the Migration Observatory. We intend to eventually expand to other dynamics, such as the interconnection between immigration and gender, and further delve into the issue of labor immigration, which, as already mentioned, is directly linked to permanence. And, eventually, count on the participation of other countries,” he added.

The Project to strengthen the integration of migrants through cooperation between Portugal and Cape Verde was promoted by the High Authority for Immigration, in partnership with the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, I.P. (AIMA), the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE) and the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), with financial support from the European Union, through the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), within the scope of the Migration Partnership Facility.

With this project, reception centers were opened that offer interpretation services in six languages.
