Africa-Press – Cape verde. Around 20 hectares of forest were consumed by the fire registered in the early hours of Sunday in Pico da Cruz/Planalto Leste, Santo Antão, the delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment reported today.
Orlando Delgado told Inforpress that at the moment the fire is being remedied, with the two work fronts permanently assigned to the Ministry of Agriculture in Planalto Leste, which are caring for and monitoring the forest.
The same source said that he has already informed the Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, of the need for a recovery plan for the entire burned area.
Orlando Delgado added that the Ministry of Agriculture always prepares the land, maintains, recovers and establishes new plantations and that, based on his experience, many of the pine plantations located in the perimeter that burned will recover.
The alert for the fire in the forest perimeter of Planalto Leste was given at around 3:00 am on Sunday, the 24th, when firefighters from the island of Santo Antão arrived at the scene.
The flames were brought under control at around 8:00 am, with firefighters remaining in Pico da Cruz until 10:00 pm to prevent possible rekindling, due to the wind that was blowing in the area.
The authorities suspect that the fire that occurred in Covada de Pico da Cruz was caused by human hands, and the case is therefore under police investigation.
