Sal Island: Santa Maria Pier partially destroyed by strong waves

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Santa Maria pier, a tourist attraction on the island of Sal, was partially destroyed today, after the sea conditions worsened and affected the coastal areas of the island, as a result of a tropical wave.

The pier, which is not only the livelihood of many fishermen and fishmongers on the island, but is also a symbol of tourism, but was unable to withstand the violence of the sea and was cut in half by the fury of the waves.

There are several images of the destruction of the pier on social media, which is moving not only the island’s residents, but also business owners due to the impact that the pier has on tourism.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG), the forecast for today indicates the continuation of strong winds from the East, with speeds of over 45 kilometres/hour, sometimes with gusts, especially on the islands of São Nicolau, São Vicente and Santo Antão, continuing into the next night/early morning.

INMG also predicts that the sea conditions will worsen, affecting the eastern coastal areas of the islands of Sal and Boa Vista at the end of the night, gradually covering all the islands of Barlavento, with waves from the northeast, then east, which could reach 3 to 5 meters in height.
