Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Association for the Defense of the Environment and Development (ADAD) held a symbolic tree planting event in Santa Cruz this Wednesday, involving children, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of environmental preservation and future sustainability.
The initiative is part of the celebrations of days dedicated to trees, water, meteorology, and poetry, and ADAD chose the municipality of Santa Cruz to develop an action that combined environmental education with community mobilization.
In an interview with the press, Zuleica Lopes, a member of ADAD and president of the Network of Professional Entities of Artisanal Fishing (ROPA-CV), explained that the main objective is to raise awareness, especially among children, about the importance of planting trees and the positive impact they have on environmental balance.
According to her, educating from an early age is fundamental to ensuring a generation more committed to the preservation of nature and sustainable practices.
The president of the Santa Cruz Fishermen’s Association, Francisco Veiga, highlighted that his organization’s participation is due to the direct link between the terrestrial environment and the ocean, emphasizing that planting trees on the slopes helps prevent debris from reaching the sea.
He also mentioned that the association regularly conducts underwater cleanup campaigns and announced a new action planned for May, arguing that caring for the land will have positive effects on the health of the oceans.
Among the participants, teenager Laritson Silva praised the initiative and the need to carry out more activities of this type throughout the year, and not just on commemorative dates.
The activity also included the presence of centenarian João Delgado, 102 years old, who highlighted the tree as an essential resource for humanity, for the benefits it offers in terms of food, protection, and environmental balance.
“Tree and Water Week,” promoted by ADAD, began on the 18th and ended today, the 25th, with various environmental education activities, culminating in the planting of trees at the Casa para Todos Complex and a discussion circle under the motto “Protecting Ecosystems and Caring for the Future.”
The celebrations mark dates such as World Tree Day and World Water Day, both celebrated on March 21st, World Meteorological Day, celebrated on the 23rd, and World Poetry Day, which reinforce the importance of nature, climate, and culture in building a sustainable future.
