Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Santiago Sul team won the National Karate Championship this Saturday, collecting a total of 16 medals, seven gold, seven silver and three bronze. The competition was held over two days at the David Fortes Sports Pavilion, in the city of Ribeira Grande, Santo Antão, with the presence of around 90 athletes from all the islands of the country.
Speaking to journalists, the coach of the Santiago Sul team, Kiluange de Melo Araújo, said that the feeling was one of satisfaction and gratitude.
“The feeling is one of happiness and a sense of duty accomplished. Given the work done, we spent a lot of time training our athletes to achieve this result. It was a joint effort and I am representing the effort of all the ‘senseis’ of Santiago Sul”, he said.
According to Kiluange de Araújo, the number of medals won is a reflection of the commitment and dedication of both athletes and coaches.
In turn, the president of the Cape Verdean Karate Federation (FCK), Alcinda Lima, gave a “very positive” assessment of the national championship.
“This was our first championship and we hope to have started off on the right foot. In the coming times, we will continue working to improve and overcome obstacles,” he said.
Alcinda Lima pointed to difficulties faced during the organization of the championship, “including delays in releasing funds, inter-island transportation problems and lack of local support”.
