Africa-Press – Cape verde. Mozambican filmmaker Júlio Silva said on Tuesday evening, the 5th, in Santo Antão, that the film Menino Mar is “a story by Cape Verdeans for Cape Verdeans” and his contribution to ensuring that “the stories of Cape Verde do not die”.
Júlio Silva, speaking at the opening of the film festival in Santo Antão, explained that this film, which portrays the tragic shipwreck of the ship Vicente, which occurred off the coast of Fogo Island in January 2015, is based “on a mother’s feeling that something was not going well on that voyage”.
“Therefore, I decided to tell this story in fictional form and not let the date die,” he emphasized.
The film, lasting one hour, tells the story of a child who disappeared in the ocean waters, according to this director and actor, who also has Cape Verdean nationality, who stressed that he directed the film because he knew the child’s mother.
This film is being shown in Santo Antão as part of a film festival that began on Tuesday, the 3rd, in the city of Porto Novo, an initiative of the Cape Verdean Cinema and Audiovisual Association (ACACV), which had the support of the Presidency of the Republic and the Porto Novo City Council.
The president of ACACV, Cândida Barros, said that the film festival is part of the association’s purposes, which, in partnership with institutions in the country, aims to bring cinema to the communities.
“ACACV has a long way to go if it is not embraced by the institutions,” said Cândida Barros, also thanking the actor and director Jorge Martins for his support in making this event possible.
Today, the film “Menino do Mar” will be shown in Ribeira Grande and on Thursday, the 5th, in Paul.
