Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Energy, Alexandre Monteiro, said today that the Santo Antão photovoltaic solar power plant, installed in Chã de Bombardeira, Porto Novo, represents an important step in the island’s energy transition.

According to Inforpress, Alexandre Monteiro, speaking at the inauguration of this infrastructure, explained that the Santo Antão solar power plant, which represented an investment of 120 million escudos, constitutes the largest source of renewable energy on the island.

With an installed capacity of 1.2 megawatts, this solar park, financed by the World Bank, marks “a new stage” in terms of clean energy in Santo Antão and allows for an increase in the penetration rate of renewable energies from 14 percent to 25%, the minister stated.

Santo Antão currently has an installed capacity in terms of renewable energies (wind and solar) of around 2.5 megawatts, and the forecast is to reach a rate of 50% by 2030, the minister added.

With this infrastructure, the government is able to save more than 40 million escudos per year on fossil fuels, according to the same source.

The project is part of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Improvement in Public Services Project, which foresees the construction of four photovoltaic plants and the installation of energy storage systems on the islands of Maio, Fogo, and São Nicolau.
